Fra Joaquim Juncosa
A portrait of Joaquim Juncosa.

Joaquim Juncosa (born in Cornudella, Tarragona, in 1631 – died in Rome in 1708) was a Spanish painter from the Baroque period. He was also a monk in the Carthusian order.

Joaquim came from a family of painters, so he started getting painting jobs very early in his life. He painted for monasteries (where monks live) and for private homes. Some of his most famous early works were four large paintings about myths, which were ordered by the Marquis of la Guardia, a leader who governed Sardinia.

His Artistic Style

Joaquim Juncosa was very skilled at drawing. His paintings show a calm and balanced Baroque style. Art experts believe that his time spent in Rome and seeing the art there greatly influenced his work. He learned from the Roman painting trends of his time.

Where to Find His Art Today

Sadly, some of Joaquim Juncosa's documented paintings were lost in 1936 during a difficult time in Spain. Many religious buildings were damaged then, and some of his art was destroyed.

However, many of his beautiful works are still preserved today! You can find some of them at the Sant Jordi Fine Arts Academy in Barcelona and at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.

One very special collection of his art is called the "Mysteries of the Rosary." This set includes fifteen paintings located at the Carthusian monastery in Valldemossa, on the island of Majorca.
