Joseph Oliver Gomes (Portuguese: Jose Gomes; December 12, 1908 – February 9, 1986) was an American outfielder who played in the Negro leagues during the 1930s. He was a talented athlete from East Providence, Rhode Island.

Early Life and High School Sports
Joe Gomes was born in East Providence, Rhode Island, on December 12, 1908. His family was of Cape Verdean descent.
He went to East Providence High School. There, he was a fantastic baseball player. He was even named an "all-state" player, meaning he was one of the best in the whole state! In 1928, he helped lead his high school team to win the state championship.
College Sports and Challenges
After high school, Joe Gomes went to Providence College. He continued to play both baseball and football there. However, his time at college was cut short. During a game against William and Mary, Joe faced unfair treatment because of his race. This sad event kept him from playing in the game. Because of this, he decided to leave college.
Playing in the Negro Leagues
Even though his college sports career ended early, Joe Gomes didn't give up on baseball. He went on to play in the Negro leagues. These leagues were professional baseball leagues in the United States. They were formed because African American players were not allowed to play in the major leagues at that time.
In 1932, Joe Gomes played for a team called the Bacharach Giants. This was a well-known team in the Negro leagues.
Later Life
