JoAnn Jayne is an important American and Navajo leader. She is a skilled attorney and politician. Currently, she serves as the Chief Justice of the Navajo Nation's highest court. She has held this important position since 2018. Before that, she was a member of the Montana House of Representatives from 2001 to 2009. She represented the Democratic Party.

JoAnn Jayne's Early Career and Education
JoAnn Jayne was born in 1957 in Shiprock, New Mexico. She studied at several universities to prepare for her career. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University, Tempe. Later, she received a Master of Science degree from the University of Arizona. She then earned her law degree, a Juris Doctor, from the University of Montana.
Serving as a Justice of the Peace
From 2012 to 2014, JoAnn Jayne served as a Justice of the Peace. This role was in Lake and Sanders County, Montana counties. A Justice of the Peace handles smaller legal cases and helps resolve local disputes.
Work as an Attorney
Before becoming a state representative, JoAnn Jayne worked as an attorney. From 1998 to 2000, she served as a lawyer for the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. This experience helped her understand different legal systems.
In 2018, JoAnn Jayne was confirmed as the Chief Justice of the Navajo Nation. This is a very high and respected position. She took over from Thomas J. Holgate, who was serving as acting Chief Justice. She became the first non-acting chief justice since Herb Yazzie in 2015. As Chief Justice, she leads the highest court for the Navajo people.
