Joey Sadler's Rugby Journey
Bernard Sydney Sadler was born in Wellington, New Zealand, in 1914. He started playing rugby at Wellington College. He was part of their top team, the 1st XV, from 1930 to 1932.
After school, Joey played club rugby for the Wellington College Old Boys team. In 1934, he joined the Wellington representative side. This meant he was one of the best players from the Wellington region.
Playing for the All Blacks
Joey Sadler was chosen to play for the All Blacks in 1935 and 1936. This is the highest honor for a rugby player in New Zealand. He played 15 games with the team during their tour of the British Isles and Canada.
During this tour, he played in three international matches. In 1936, he also played in both Bledisloe Cup games against the Australian team. The Bledisloe Cup is a famous rugby competition between New Zealand and Australia.
A Short but Strong Career
Joey Sadler was known for being a small player. The British newspapers even called him "the pocket battleship" because he was so strong. He was also very skilled with the ball and had good speed.
Sadly, his rugby career ended early. In 1937, he hurt a nerve in his knee during a club game. The injury was so bad that he could not play rugby again.
Later Life
Bernard Sadler married Noeleen Welborne Nelson on February 5, 1941. They lived for many years in Paraparaumu Beach, a town in New Zealand.
