Johan Falkberget, whose birth name was Johan Petter Lillebakken, was a famous Norwegian author. He was born on September 30, 1879, and passed away on April 5, 1967. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, which is a huge honor for writers.

Life and Career of Johan Falkberget

Johan Falkberget grew up in a place called Rugldal valley, near the copper mining town of Røros in Norway. His family lived on a farm named Lillebakken.

From Miner to Writer

Johan started writing early. In 1891, he began working on his "Christianus Sextus" story series, though it wasn't published until much later. In 1893, he officially changed his last name from Lillebakken to Falkberget. This was a common practice back then, taking the name of the farm where he lived.

His first book was published in 1902. He worked as a miner for some time, but in 1906, he decided to focus on writing. He became an editor for a newspaper called Nybrott in Ålesund. Later, in 1908, he moved to Fredrikstad to edit another newspaper, Smaalenenes Socialdemokrat.

Johan then received a special scholarship from the government. This allowed him to travel and focus on his writing. From 1909 to 1922, he lived and worked mainly in Kristiania, which is now known as Oslo.

Returning Home and Political Life

In 1922, Johan Falkberget moved back to Røros, the area he loved. He lived on a farm called Ratvolden, very close to his childhood home. Today, his house at Ratvolden is a museum that people can visit.

While living there, he also became involved in politics. He represented the Norwegian Labour Party (Arbeiderpartiet) in the Storting, which is Norway's parliament. He served as a representative for Sør-Trøndelag from 1931 to 1933.

His Inspiring Stories

Because Johan grew up in a mining area and even worked as a miner, his stories often focused on the lives of miners and the local culture. He wrote about the people, their struggles, and the beautiful but harsh landscape.

His big breakthrough book was Den fjerde nattevakt (The Fourth Night Watch), published in 1923. This was a historical novel set in the 1800s, all about life around the mines. After this, he published his famous "Christianus Sextus" trilogy. These books were set in the 1720s, and mining life was a very important part of these stories too. Johan also wrote many articles for the local newspaper Fjell-Ljom.

Johan Falkberget passed away on April 5, 1967. He is buried in the family grave at the churchyard in Røros.

What Made His Writing Special

A person who wrote a book about Johan Falkberget, Sturle Kojen, said that "The miners' toil and rhythm of life became the fulcrum of Falkberget's literature." This means that the hard work and daily lives of the miners were the most important part of his stories. He wanted to show their experiences to the world.
