Johann Heinrich Abicht was born in a place called Volkstedt. Today, Volkstedt is part of the town of Rudolstadt in Germany. His family had a history of teaching. His grandfather was a teacher and played the organ in Wilmersdorf. His father was also a teacher in Volkstedt.
His Education and Career
Johann Abicht finished college in Rudolstadt. In 1781, he went to the University of Erlangen to continue his studies. By 1784, he started working as a controller for a chief equerry (a person in charge of horses) named von Schall in Öhringen.
Abicht earned his "magister" degree in 1786. This was an advanced university degree, similar to a master's degree today. Then, in 1790, he earned his "doctor in philosophy" degree, which is the highest university degree in philosophy.
In the same year, 1790, he became an "adjunct" and then an "extraordinary professor" at the university. This means he started as a junior professor and then moved up. By 1796, he became a "regular professor," which is a full professor.
On August 4, 1804, Abicht was given a new important job. He became a professor of logic and metaphysics at the newly reorganized university in Wilna. Logic is the study of correct reasoning, and metaphysics is the study of the basic nature of reality. He continued teaching there until he passed away in Wilna.
