Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Johann Rosenmüller (born in 1619 – died on September 10, 1684) was a German composer from the Baroque period. He was important for bringing Italian music styles to northern Europe.

Johann Rosenmüller was born in a town called Oelsnitz, near Plauen in Saxony. He went to the University of Leipzig and finished his studies in 1640.

Early Career and Challenges

In 1651, Johann became an organist at the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig. He was expected to become the main music director, known as a cantor. By 1654, he also became the music director for the court in Altenburg, even though he wasn't always there.

However, in 1655, Johann faced serious accusations. To avoid trouble, he quickly left Germany and moved to Italy.

Life in Italy

By 1658, Johann Rosenmüller was working at Saint Mark's Basilica in Venice, a very famous church. While in Italy, he wrote many pieces for voices. He also taught music at an orphanage for girls called the Ospedale della Pietà between 1678 and 1682.

He was inspired by the music of Italian composers like Giovanni Legrenzi. His church music also showed the influence of the famous German composer Heinrich Schütz.

Return to Germany

In his later years, Rosenmüller went back to Germany. He returned with Duke Anton-Ulrich of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Johann worked as the choir master for the Duke's court.

He passed away in Wolfenbüttel on September 10, 1684, and was buried there.

His Music

Johann Rosenmüller wrote many different kinds of musical pieces. His most famous works include collections of sacred (religious) songs. These collections were often called Kern-Sprüche, which means "Core Sentences." He wrote music for voices and instruments, often using strings or brass instruments.

His music helped to mix the exciting new Italian styles with traditional German music.
