Johanna Hurwitz was born on October 9, 1937. She is an American author who has written over sixty books for children. Millions of her books have been sold around the world in many different languages.
About Johanna Hurwitz
Johanna Hurwitz studied at Queens College, New York, where she earned a degree in English. She also went to Columbia University and got a master's degree in library science. This means she learned how to organize and manage libraries.
For many years, Johanna worked as a librarian. In 1976, she wrote her first book, Busybody Nora. This book was one of the first "chapter books." Chapter books help young readers move from shorter stories to longer novels.
It took 17 tries for Busybody Nora to be published! Finally, Ravenstone Press published the book just three months after Johanna sent them her story.
Johanna Hurwitz has written many different kinds of books. Some of her books are biographies for children. Biographies tell the life story of real people. She has written about famous people like Anne Frank, Astrid Lindgren, Leonard Bernstein, and Helen Keller.
In 1999, she wrote a book called The Just Desserts Club. This book was special because it had short stories and also included recipes!
