Ida Johanne Hesbeck (born September 2, 1873 – died March 25, 1927) was a talented photographer from Denmark. She was known for her amazing portrait studio in Holte, a town north of Copenhagen. She ran this studio for many years, from 1915 until 1927.

Early Life and Training

Ida Johanne Hesbeck was born in Varde, a town in Jutland, Denmark. Her father, Christoffer Johannes Hesbeck, was a merchant. Johanne learned photography from a famous photographer named Peter Elfelt. She worked for him from 1905 to 1914.

Opening Her Own Studio

In 1914, Johanne moved to Søllerød Municipality. She opened her very own photography business in Ny Holte. Her studio was located on Esthersvej, and she later bought the building. She mostly took pictures of people, creating beautiful portraits. Sometimes, she also took photos for the local newspaper, Søllerød Tidende.

After Johanne passed away in Holte in 1927, another photographer named Ella Bach took over her studio. Ella Bach continued to run the business until the late 1970s.

Discovering Her Work

In the early 1980s, the building where Johanne's studio was located was going to be torn down. That's when an amazing discovery was made! A huge collection of Johanne Hesbeck's photographs was found.

This collection included about 4,000 photographic plates. These were like the early versions of film negatives, measuring about 12 by 8 centimeters. There were also around 400 larger negatives, about 16.5 by 12 centimeters. These photos were taken between 1915 and 1927. Most of them were portraits of individuals or groups of people.

The collection also had about 300 stereoscope negatives. These were special negatives used to create 3D images, taken between 1895 and 1915. Johanne was very organized! All her photos had a number, and she wrote down the name and address of the person in the picture.

Her photographs were very high quality. Even though they followed traditional styles, she used special artificial lighting and shadow effects to make them look great. She even took many pictures of dogs!
