John Acland (born around 1674, died May 1703) was an English gentleman. He was a member of Parliament for a short time. He represented the area of Callington. Sadly, he passed away before his father, Sir Hugh Acland, 5th Baronet.

John Acland's Family and Early Life

John Acland was the oldest son of Sir Hugh Acland, 5th Baronet and his wife, Anne. He started his studies at Exeter College, Oxford on May 12, 1692. He was 17 years old at that time.

On March 24, 1696, John married Elizabeth Acland. She was the daughter of Richard Acland from Barnstaple. Elizabeth was also the sister of Richard Acland, who was a distant relative. John and Elizabeth had four sons and one daughter:

  • Sir Hugh Acland, 6th Baronet (born around 1696, died 1728)
  • Richard Acland (died 1735) was a merchant who traded with Portugal. He married Anne Burrell and had a daughter named Anne. This daughter later married Richard Hoare.
  • Rev. John Acland (born around 1699, died 1744) was a church leader. He was the rector of Broadclyst from 1730 to 1744. He had one son, also named Rev. John Acland.
  • Arthur Acland (died May 30, 1740) married Elizabeth Gilbert. They did not have any children.
  • Elizabeth Acland (died 1738) married Sir John Davie, 6th Baronet on May 3, 1726.

John Acland's Time in Parliament

John Acland became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Callington. He was supported by John Rolle. John Rolle was married to John Acland's cousin, Florence Rolle.

Like his father, John Acland was not very active in Parliament. He likely shared the same political views as his father. These views were generally considered "Tory." Tories were a political group in England at that time. They often supported the King and the Church of England.

John Acland was thought to be a "Tacker" in a list from 1704. A Tacker was someone who supported a specific type of law. However, this list was made after John Acland had already passed away. He was buried in Broad Clyst on May 20, 1703.
