John Ashburnham, 2nd Earl of Ashburnham facts for kids

John Ashburnham, 2nd Earl of Ashburnham (born October 30, 1724 – died April 8, 1812) was an important British nobleman and a helper at the royal court. He was known as Viscount St Asaph from 1730 until 1737, when he became an Earl. He was also a member of the King's special council.
Early Life
John Ashburnham was the only son of John Ashburnham, 1st Earl of Ashburnham. His mother was Jemima Grey, who was the daughter of the 1st Duke of Kent. The Duke of Kent was a well-known person at the royal court.
His Career
In 1737, John Ashburnham received his father's titles and became the 2nd Earl of Ashburnham. In 1748, he started working for the King as a Lord of the Bedchamber. This role meant he was a close attendant to the King.
From 1753 to 1762, he was in charge of Hyde Park and St. James's Park in London. He also served as the Lord Lieutenant of Sussex from 1754 to 1757. This role meant he was the King's main representative in the county of Sussex.
In 1765, he became the Master of the Great Wardrobe. This job involved managing the King's clothes and royal decorations. Later, in 1775, he was appointed Groom of the Stole. This was a very important position, making him one of the King's closest personal attendants.
In 1767, he bought some land in Chelsea. His home there was called Ashburnham House. He later sold this property in 1786.
Family Life
On June 25, 1756, John Ashburnham married Elizabeth Crowley (1727–1781). Elizabeth was the daughter of Alderman John Crowley, a very rich merchant from London. Elizabeth brought a large sum of money, £200,000, into the marriage.
John and Elizabeth had six children:
- George (born and died in 1758), who was called Viscount St Asaph.
- Lady Henrietta Theodosia (1759–1847), who never married.
- George (1760–1830), who also used the title Viscount St Asaph. He later became the 3rd Earl of Ashburnham.
- Lady Jemima Elizabeth (1762–1786), who married James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose.
- Lady Elizabeth Frances (1763–1854), who never married.
- Lady Theodosia Maria (1765–1822), who married Robert Vyner.
Lord Ashburnham passed away on April 8, 1812. His son, George, took over his titles and became the next Earl.
