John Ashley Warre was born on October 5, 1787. He came from a family of merchants who traded with colonies. He was the oldest son of John Henry Warre.

His Education and Early Life

John went to Harrow School from 1796 to 1804. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford starting in 1804. When his father passed away in 1801, John took over the family business.

His Political Career

John Ashley Warre became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1812. An MP is someone elected to represent a group of people in the government. He held different seats in Parliament over the years.

Representing Different Areas

  • He first represented Lostwithiel from 1812 to 1818.
  • Later, he represented Taunton from 1820 to 1826.
  • He then served for Hastings from 1831 to 1834.
  • Finally, he represented Ripon from 1857 to 1860.

Other Important Roles

In 1824, John inherited property in Folkestone from his uncle. He was also chosen to be the High Sheriff of Kent for 1848–49. A High Sheriff is a ceremonial officer who represents the King or Queen in a county.

Helping Animals

John Ashley Warre was very interested in helping animals. He was one of the people who helped start the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Founding the SPCA

In 1824, he attended a special meeting in London. At this meeting, people voted to create the SPCA. This group later became the RSPCA in 1840, which is still a very important animal welfare charity today.
