Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Asty (born around 1672, died 1730) was an English clergyman. He was known as a 'dissenter' because he did not follow the official Church of England. He spent his life serving his community and discussing important religious ideas.

John Asty's Early Life and Ministry

John Asty was born in Norwich, England, around the year 1672. His father was Robert Asty. His grandfather, also named John, was a minister who had been forced to leave his church. This happened because he did not agree with the rules of the Church of England. John Asty was very thankful for his religious family and the good education he received.

For several years, John Asty worked with the Fleetwood family in Stoke Newington. This was a town located just outside London back then. In 1713, he became the main pastor for a church group. This church was located in Ropemaker's Alley in Moorfields, London. He stayed there and led the congregation for the rest of his life.

Religious Discussions and Beliefs

John Asty was involved in important religious discussions of his time. He had a debate with another minister named Martin Tomkins. Tomkins held beliefs that were different from the common understanding of the Trinity. The Trinity is a key Christian idea about God.

John Asty strongly supported the traditional understanding of the Trinity. This idea is found in the Bible and in the beliefs of the Church of England. In 1719, he signed a special statement about the Trinity. This happened at a meeting called the Salters' Hall synod.

Later Life and Writings

John Asty greatly admired the writings of John Owen. Owen was a famous theologian who wrote many practical religious books.

John Asty passed away on January 20, 1730. He was buried in Bunhill Fields, a famous burial ground in London.

He did not publish many of his own works. He released only one sermon, which was a speech given at the funeral of Mrs. Elizabeth Fleetwood in 1728. He also wrote a special introduction for a large collection of sermons and writings by Dr. John Owen in 1721.
