John Atkins began his career working on ships, sailing the seas. Later, he and his brother Abram started a business together. They were merchants, trading goods from the West Indies. This business helped him become well-known and successful.
A Leader in London
John Atkins became a local leader in London. In 1808, he was chosen as an Alderman. An Alderman is like a city council member who helps manage the city.
He also served as a Sheriff of London from 1809 to 1810. This role involved helping to keep law and order in the city. His biggest role was being the Lord Mayor of London from 1818 to 1819. The Lord Mayor is the head of the city government.

Besides his work in London, John Atkins was also a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone elected to represent people in the country's main government, called Parliament.
