John Atwell grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. He went to Hyndland Secondary School. After school, he started an apprenticeship at Yarrow Shipbuilders. This meant he learned a trade by working alongside experienced engineers.

He later studied at King's College, Cambridge University. In 1939, he earned a special degree called an MSc.

Working Life and World War II

After his studies, John Atwell became a manager at Stewarts & Lloyds. This company was very important during the Second World War. They made many of the shells used in the war.

Later, from 1968 to 1970, he became the Chairman of the Weir Group. This is a big engineering company.

Awards and Recognition

John Atwell was recognized for his important work. In 1963, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a famous group for smart people in Scotland. He even served as their President from 1982 to 1985.

In 1970, he received a special award called a CBE. This stands for Commander of the British Empire. It's a high honor given by the Queen. In 1976, Queen Elizabeth II made him a knight. This meant he was called "Sir John Atwell."

He also received an honorary doctorate from Strathclyde University in 1973. This is a special degree given to people who have done great things.

Sir John Atwell passed away in Glasgow.

Family Life

In 1945, John Atwell married Dorothy Baxter. She was the sister of his good friend, Allan Baxter.
