John Bradley Gambling (born April 9, 1897, died November 21, 1974) was a famous American radio host. He was part of the amazing Gambling family. Three generations of his family hosted a popular morning radio show on WOR Radio in New York City. This show, called Rambling with Gambling, ran for over 75 years! John B. Gambling started this long family tradition.
Early Life and Big Dreams
John B. Gambling grew up in Cambridge, England. When he was a teenager, he studied horticulture. This means he learned all about growing plants and gardens. He hoped to work with plants one day. Later, he joined the merchant marine. This was like being a sailor on large ships that carried goods or passengers. He became a main radio operator on these big ships. During World War I, he even worked on a British mine sweeper.
Becoming a Radio Star
John B. Gambling became a radio host in 1925. He hosted the morning show on WOR Radio until 1959. That's 34 years on the air! He was a very important part of the station.
His show was unique and fun. He had something called the "Musical Clock." He also led listeners through fun setting-up exercises. People loved his cheerful music and funny jokes. He also shared important weather updates and news.
John Gambling even had a live band on his show! Every morning at 7 AM, they would play music. One popular song was the "March of the Seven Dwarfs." In 1929, John Gambling bought a home in Teaneck, New Jersey.
When John B. Gambling retired in 1959, his son, John A. Gambling, took over the show. This continued the family's amazing radio legacy.
