Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Baldwin (who passed away in 1691) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons (a part of the government) in 1659 and 1660.

Early Life and Education

John Baldwin was the oldest son of Thomas Baldwin from Cholesbury, a place in Buckinghamshire, England. In 1642, he studied law at a famous place called Middle Temple in London.

Working for the Government

John Baldwin had several important jobs. From 1641 to 1642, he worked as a clerk (a kind of assistant) for government officials who went to Scotland. He also worked as a secretary for a powerful person called the Earl of Essex. Until 1645, he held a military police role.

From 1645, he had an important job as a 'gentleman porter' at the Tower of London, a famous historic castle. Before 1650, he bought some large estates (called 'manors') in a town called Wendover. He later sold them in 1660.

A Member of Parliament

In 1659, people in Wendover chose John Baldwin to be their Member of Parliament (MP). This happened during a special government meeting called the Third Protectorate Parliament.

In 1660, he was chosen again as an MP for Wendover in another important meeting called the Convention Parliament. When the king returned to power (this was called the Restoration), John Baldwin lost his job at the Tower of London. He was also not chosen for other government roles. He spent the last 30 years of his life living peacefully in a place called Hillingdon.

Family and Later Life

John Baldwin passed away in 1691 and was buried in Hillingdon on October 13, 1691. He had a son and a daughter with his first wife, Elizabeth. He did not have children with his second wife, Mary.
