Early Life and Becoming a Lawyer
John Barton was the son of Francis Barton. His family lived in a place called Brigstock in Northamptonshire, England.
In 1632, John began his legal studies. He joined a famous legal society in London called the Middle Temple. This was a place where aspiring lawyers learned their trade.
After years of study, he officially became a lawyer in 1639. This is often called being "called to the bar."
His Time in Parliament
John Barton also had a career in politics. In 1659, he was chosen by the people of Fowey to represent them. Fowey is a town in Cornwall, England.
He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Fowey. An MP is someone who speaks for their local area in the government. This was during a time known as the Third Protectorate Parliament.
He was chosen again as an MP for Fowey in April 1660. This time, he served in a special group called the Convention Parliament.
Later Legal Career
After his time in Parliament, John Barton continued his legal work. In September 1660, he took on a role helping with taxes in Middlesex. This position was called a commissioner for assessment.
He also took on more important roles within the Middle Temple. In 1662, he became a "bencher." This was a senior position within the legal society. Later, in 1667, he became a "reader," which meant he taught law to other students.
In 1669, John Barton received a very high legal honor. He was appointed as a Serjeant-at-law. This was a special type of senior lawyer who could argue cases in the highest courts.
Family Life
Before 1649, John Barton married Joan Roscarrock. She was the daughter of Charles Roscarrock from Cornwall. Together, they had two sons and one daughter.
