Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Blackmore was an English politician who lived in the 1600s. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the government in England. He served there in 1654.

Early Life and Education

John Blackmore was the son of another man named John Blackmore, who lived in Exeter, a town in Devon, England.

When he was 18 years old, John Blackmore started studying at Exeter College, Oxford on December 12, 1634. This is called "matriculating." He worked hard and earned his first university degree, a Bachelor of Arts (BA), on January 16, 1640. Later, on May 19, 1649, he earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree. At that time, he was also a major in the army.

Becoming a Politician

In 1654, John Blackmore was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Tiverton. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the House of Commons. This election was for the First Protectorate Parliament, which was a special government assembly during a time when England was not ruled by a king.

However, the election for Tiverton was later declared "void." This means it was cancelled or found to be invalid. Instead, he became an MP for two other areas combined: East Looe and West Looe.

Important Roles

It is believed that John Blackmore was given the title of "knight" by Oliver Cromwell. Oliver Cromwell was a very powerful leader in England during this time. Being knighted was a special honor given by a leader.

John Blackmore also served as the Sheriff of Devon in either 1657 or 1658. A Sheriff was an important official who helped manage the county and enforce laws.
