John Brailsford the elder (born 1692, died 1765) was an English church leader and a poet. He is called "the elder" to help people tell him apart from his son, John Brailsford the younger, who also worked for the church.

Early Life and Education

John Brailsford was born on May 10, 1692. His father, also named John Brailsford, worked with metals as a tinman and a pewterer.

John went to school at Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood. After that, he studied at St. John's College, Cambridge. He was admitted as a sizar, which meant he received financial help with his studies. He earned his first degree (B.A.) in 1712 and his master's degree (M.A.) in 1717.

Becoming a Church Leader

John Brailsford became a Deacon in March 1715. A year later, in May 1716, he was ordained as a Priest. Bishop William Dawes performed these ceremonies at York Minster.

His first job was as a Curate in Kirkby In Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He helped his uncle, Matthew Brailsford, who was the Rector there.

His Church Roles

In 1719, John became the Rector of St Bartholomew's Church in Blore Ray, Staffordshire. He held this important position until 1728.

Later, in 1726, he also worked as a Curate in Blaston, Leicestershire. He helped Mr. Anthony Mainwaring, who was the Rector of Blaston.

From 1730 to 1734, John served as the Vicar of Combe St Nicholas in Somerset.

In 1734, after his uncle Matthew Brailsford passed away, John took over as the Rector of Kirkby In Ashfield, Nottinghamshire. He continued in this role for the rest of his life, until he died in 1765.

His Writings

John Brailsford also wrote poetry. His most known work is called Derby Silk-Mill, attempted in Miltonick Verse. This poem was published in Nottingham in 1739.
