John Burke (born around 1843, died 1900) was a photographer. He is most famous for his pictures taken during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, which happened between 1878 and 1880.
John was born in Ireland around 1843. He worked as a tradesman there. He wanted to be an official photographer for the British Army. Even though he didn't get that job, he traveled to Afghanistan on his own. He carried very heavy cameras. These cameras needed to be moved by pack animals through tough mountains. Burke was the first important photographer to capture images of Afghanistan. He passed away in 1900.
Sometimes, Burke's photos are mixed with those from other photographers like Benjamin Simpson. This makes it hard to know for sure which pictures are exactly his.
