John Burns

John Burns (born November 13, 1775 – died June 18, 1850) was an important Scottish surgeon. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a big honor for scientists.

A Surgeon's Life

John Burns grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. His father, also named John Burns, was a minister at the Barony Church.

John became a surgeon who visited patients at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He also owned a medical school on College Street.

In 1815, he became the very first Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow. This was a special teaching job given by the King or Queen.

He lived in a place called 5 Blythswood Square in Glasgow.

Sadly, John Burns died in June 1850. He was one of about fifty people who passed away when the paddle steamship Orion sank. The ship was traveling from Liverpool to Glasgow.

His Family

In 1801, John Burns married Isabella Duncan. She was the daughter of Rev. John Duncan from Alva. John and Isabella had four children together.

Their first child, John, was born in 1806. He joined the 78th Highlanders and later became a Lieutenant-Colonel. He died in 1853 while serving in the Cape.

Their second son, Allan, was born in 1819. Allan became a doctor. He died in 1843 from typhoid fever, which he caught from a patient.
