John Burrard (born 9 January 1646 – died 14 May 1698) was an important person in English politics. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Lymington. He held this position for many years, from 1679 until his death in 1698.

Early Life and Family

John Burrard was born in Lymington, England. His parents were Thomas Burrard and Elizabeth Isham. He received his education at the Middle Temple, which was a place where people trained to become lawyers.

In 1666, John Burrard married Elizabeth Button. Her father, John Button, was also a Member of Parliament. John and Elizabeth had seven children together: two sons and five daughters. After Elizabeth passed away in 1676, John married again. His second wife was Alice Herbert.

Working for the King and His Town

John Burrard had several important jobs during his life. From 1666 to 1685, he worked for the King as a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber. This meant he was part of the King's personal staff.

He was also very involved in his hometown of Lymington. In 1667, he was made a Freeman of Lymington. This gave him special rights and privileges in the town. He served as the Mayor of Lymington twice. His first term was from 1672 to 1673, and his second was from 1692 to 1695.

Other Important Roles

John Burrard held other significant positions too. He helped with taxes as a Commissioner for Assessment in Hampshire. He did this from 1677 to 1680 and again from 1689 to 1690.

He also worked to protect the New Forest. In 1679, he was a Commissioner of Wastes and Spoils for the New Forest. Later, starting in 1689, he became the Ranger of the New Forest. This meant he was in charge of looking after the forest. At the same time, he also became the Governor of Hurst Castle, an important fortress. In 1697, he was made a Lieutenant Colonel in the local army, known as the Militia.
