Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Button (born 1624 – died December 1679) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's parliament, at different times between 1659 and 1679.

Who Was John Button?

John Button was the only son of another man named John Button. His family lived in a place called Buckland in Hampshire, England. His mother was Eleanor South.

Early Life and Education

In 1641, John Button began studying law at a famous place called Inner Temple in London. This was a school where people learned to become lawyers. In 1646, he became a "freeman" of Lymington. This meant he had special rights and privileges in that town. By 1648, he was helping to organize the local army, known as the militia, as a "commissioner."

Becoming a Member of Parliament

John Button started his political career in 1659. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Lymington. This was during a time called the Third Protectorate Parliament. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the government.

He was re-elected as an MP for Lymington in 1660. This time, it was for a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament.

Later Life and Family

In 1665, John Button inherited his family's estate in Buckland after his father passed away. From 1677, he also helped to collect taxes in Hampshire as a "commissioner for assessment." By 1679, he was a captain in the local militia.

John Button was elected as an MP for Lymington twice in 1679. However, he sadly died in December 1679 before the second Parliament he was elected to could even meet.

John Button married a woman named Mary Jesson. She was the daughter of William Jesson, who was a dyer (someone who dyes cloth) from Coventry. John and Mary had one son and five daughters.
