Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Byne (born 1635 – died 1661) was an English landowner and a politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, from 1659 until he passed away in 1661.

John Byne was born in 1635 and was the oldest son of Edmund Byne. His family lived in a place called Rowdell, which is near Washington, West Sussex. When his father died in 1646, John inherited the family estate at Rowdell.

Becoming a Politician

In 1659, John Byne was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a town called Bramber. This happened during a time known as the Third Protectorate Parliament. Being an MP meant he helped make decisions for the country.

He also had other important jobs. In 1659, he was a commissioner for the militia in Sussex. This meant he helped organize the local military forces. From 1660 until his death, he was a commissioner for assessment, helping to collect taxes. He was also a captain in the militia horse, leading a group of soldiers on horseback.

More Time in Parliament

John Byne was re-elected as an MP for Bramber in April 1660. This time, it was for the Convention Parliament. Later, in 1661, he was elected again for the Cavalier Parliament. This shows he was a trusted leader in his community. He also worked as a commissioner for sewers in West Sussex, helping to manage water systems.

Family Life and Passing

John Byne married Susanna Hodgson on June 14, 1657. They had four daughters together. Sadly, John Byne died at a young age, when he was only 26 years old. He was buried in Washington on December 31, 1661. After his death, his wife, Susanna, later married Sir Francis Guybon, who was also an MP.
