John Clayton (born 1620) was an English politician. He was a member of the English Parliament in 1659 and 1660. He also fought as a soldier for the Parliament during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Education

John Clayton was born in 1620. His father, also named John Clayton, was from Okenshaw, Yorkshire. His mother was Elizabeth Fitzwilliam. John's father was a lawyer and a judge in Leeds.

John Clayton went to Clare College, Cambridge in 1638. He also studied law at Inner Temple starting in 1639. He became a lawyer in 1648.

Joining the Fight

In 1643, John Clayton became a captain in the Parliamentary army. This army fought against the King during the English Civil War. He helped capture Leeds and took the flag of Sir William Savile.

Clayton also helped defend the city of Hull. Before 1650, he became a major in the army.

A Career in Politics

In 1659, John Clayton was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Lostwithiel. This was during the Third Protectorate Parliament.

Serving in Parliament

In 1660, he was again elected as an MP for Lostwithiel. This time, it was for the Convention Parliament. There was a small issue with the election results, but it was decided in his favor in June.

Later, in 1662, John Clayton faced some challenges. He was held for about four months due to political disagreements.

Later Years and Family

John Clayton was not married for a long time. When his father passed away in 1671, John was over 50 years old. To inherit his father's property, he needed to marry within three years.

He married Thomasine Goodwin. She was the widow of Deane Goodwin and the daughter of Sir Samuel Owfield.
