John Coventry was the son of Thomas Coventry, 1st Baron Coventry. Thomas was a very important person called the 1st Baron Coventry. John's mother was Elizabeth Aldersley. She was the daughter of John Aldersley.
John's Time in Parliament
In 1641, John became a Member of Parliament (MP). He was chosen to represent the town of Evesham. He got this job after another MP, William Sandys, left. Sandys was removed because he was a "monopolist." This meant he had unfair control over certain businesses.
Why John Left Parliament
John Coventry stopped being an MP on August 12, 1642. This happened because he joined something called the Commission of Array. This group supported the King during a time of conflict. Being part of this group meant he could no longer serve in Parliament.
John's Family Life
John Coventry married Elizabeth Dodington. She was the daughter of John Coles. John and Elizabeth had a son also named John. His son later became an MP for Weymouth. An event involving his son in 1670 led to a famous law. This law was known as the "Coventry Act."
