Discovering the Haynes House
The John D. Haynes House was built in 1952. It shows off Wright's unique ideas about how homes should look and feel. The house uses natural materials like glass, red tidewater cypress wood, and Chicago Common Brick. It sits on a red concrete slab, which is its foundation.
What is a Usonian Home?
Frank Lloyd Wright designed "Usonian" homes to be simple and affordable. They were often smaller and built using natural materials. These homes usually had open living areas and were designed to connect with the outdoors. The Haynes House is a perfect example of this style.
Inside the House
The house has a unique layout. It features a long hallway called a gallery. This gallery connects to the main living space, known as the great room. Unlike many houses, this gallery meets the great room right in the middle.
Off this main gallery, you can find a music room and three bedrooms. The way the house is shaped from above looks like an "outside T." The great room faces the southwest and southeast, letting in lots of light. The bedrooms look towards the southeast, catching the morning sun. The roof of the house is also special because it's not perfectly even on both sides.
A Historic Home
The John D. Haynes House is located within the original design of the Wildwood Park neighborhood. This area was planned by a well-known landscape architect named Arthur Asahel Shurcliff.
Protecting its History
Because of its special design and history, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This is a list of important places in the United States that are worth preserving.
Later, in April 2008, the house was also declared a Local Historic District. This happened because the owner at the time asked for it. This means the house has special protection to keep its unique look and history safe.
Keeping the Designation
In 2010, the owner of the house, Richard Herber, asked the local board to remove the historic designation. However, the board decided to keep the designation. They felt it was important to protect the house's history.
The owner later tried to challenge this decision in court in 2016. But the case was dismissed in March 2017, meaning the house kept its historic status. This shows how important it is to protect special buildings like the John D. Haynes House for future generations.
