John Dalton (born around 1610 – died August 30, 1679) was an English politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is a bit like a country's main law-making group, from 1659 to 1679.
Early Life and Local Leadership
John Dalton was the son of John Dalton, who sold wine in Nottingham. John the younger settled in Derby and became a draper, which means he sold cloth.
He became an important person in Derby. In 1645, he was chosen as an alderman. An alderman was a senior member of the town council.
Dalton served as the mayor of Derby twice. He was mayor first in 1646 and again in 1652. The mayor is the leader of a town or city.
Serving in Parliament
In 1659, John Dalton was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Derby. An MP is someone chosen by people to represent them in the national Parliament.
He served in different Parliaments during his time. He was an MP in the Third Protectorate Parliament in 1659. Then, he was re-elected in 1660 for the Convention Parliament.
Dalton was elected again in 1661 for the Cavalier Parliament. He continued to serve as an MP for Derby until 1679. This means he was a national lawmaker for many years.
Family and Later Life
John Dalton married Anne Pyott. Her father was Richard Pyott from Streetly, Staffordshire. John and Anne had two sons together.
When he passed away on August 30, 1679, John Dalton was still the senior alderman of Derby. He died while visiting Nottingham and was buried in Derby.
