John Drummond, 2nd Earl of Perth facts for kids
John Drummond, 2nd Earl of Perth (1588–1662) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held a special title and played a role in Scottish life during the 1600s.
John Drummond's Early Life and Education
John Drummond was the son of Patrick Drummond, the 3rd Lord Drummond, and Lady Elizabeth Lindsay. When his father passed away in 1602, John became the 4th Lord Drummond.
John wrote about his own education and early life. He first studied in Dunblane, a town in Scotland. Then, he went to school in Edinburgh, following the advice of his sister, Lilias, Lady Fyvie. This was until 1603, when King James VI of Scotland also became King James I of England, an event known as the Union of the Crowns.
After this, John traveled to France. He studied with Robert Balfour, a philosopher and Catholic, who was the head of the College of Guienne. Next, John went to Toulouse, where he attended lectures on law. He also spent some time in Paris in 1610 and witnessed the coronation of Marie de' Medici as Regent on May 13.
Becoming the Earl of Perth
In August 1610, John visited London. He saw his sister, Jean Drummond, who was an influential courtier serving Anne of Denmark, the Queen.
John's older brother, James Drummond (1586–1611), had been given the title of Earl of Perth. Sadly, James died in 1611. Because of a special rule, John Drummond then became the Earl of Perth on December 8, 1611.
John was involved in a conflict with the Clan MacGregor at Duncrub in 1611. King James VI was pleased with how things turned out. John went back to court for several months, where his sister, Lady Roxburghe, helped him keep his living costs low.
John Drummond also wrote a tribute to Anna Gordon, the wife of his son, James Drummond. Anna died in January 1656 after giving birth to a daughter. She was buried at the family chapel in Innerpeffray.
John Drummond passed away on June 11, 1662.
