John Erskine, 4th Baron Erskine facts for kids
John Cadwalader Erskine, the 4th Baron Erskine (born in 1804, died March 28, 1882), was a British diplomat and a member of the nobility. He held an important title called "Baron," which he inherited later in his life.
His Early Life
John Cadwalader Erskine was born in 1804. He was the second son of David Erskine, the 2nd Baron Erskine, who was a Member of Parliament (MP) and also a diplomat. His mother was Frances Cadwalader.
John had many brothers and sisters. Some of his siblings, like his brother Thomas Americus Erskine and Edward Morris Erskine, also became diplomats, just like their father. His sister Elizabeth married Sir St Vincent Hawkins-Whitshed, a baronet.
His grandfather, Thomas Erskine, the 1st Baron Erskine, was a very important lawyer and politician. John's maternal grandfather, John Cadwalader, was an American general during the American Revolutionary War.
His Work and Title
John Erskine worked for the East India Company, which was a powerful British trading company that governed parts of India. He was part of their Civil Service, meaning he held important jobs in the administration. He worked as a Judge and also as a Superintendent of Police in an area of India called the Cis-Sutlej states. This meant he helped keep law and order.
In 1877, his older brother passed away. Because of this, John inherited the title of the 4th Baron Erskine. This title had been created for his grandfather in 1806. A "Baron" is a noble title, placing him in the British peerage.
His Family Life
John Cadwalader Erskine was married twice. His first wife was Margaret Martyn, whom he married on April 30, 1829. She passed away in 1862.
Later, on January 25, 1865, he married Maria Louisa Cullen Campbell. Together, they had three children:
- Hon. Fanny Macnaghten Erskine (who died in 1872).
- Hon. Margaret Catherine Erskine (who died in 1940). She married twice.
- William Macnaghten Erskine, 5th Baron Erskine (1841–1913). He later became the 5th Baron Erskine after his father.
Lord Erskine passed away on March 28, 1882, in Torquay, Devon. His son, William, then inherited his title and became the 5th Baron Erskine.
