Starting His Political Journey
John Finan first tried to become a member of the Dáil Éireann in 1948. The Dáil Éireann is like the main parliament or law-making body in Ireland. He ran for the Roscommon area, but he didn't win that time.
Even though he didn't get into the Dáil, John Finan still became a politician. He was chosen to be a Senator in April 1948. The Seanad Éireann is the upper house of the Irish parliament, like a second group of lawmakers. He was part of something called the "Administrative Panel." He served as a Senator until May 1951.
Becoming a Teachta Dála (TD)
In 1951, John Finan tried again to get into the Dáil Éireann. This time, he was successful! He was elected as a Teachta Dála (TD) for Roscommon. A TD is a member of the Dáil Éireann. He was part of the Clann na Talmhan political party. This party mainly represented the interests of farmers and rural communities in Ireland.
John Finan served as a TD from May 1951 until May 1954. In the 1954 general election, he lost his seat in the Dáil. This means he was no longer a TD after that election.

John Finan had a daughter named Mary. She grew up to become a very successful businesswoman. This shows that his family also contributed to Irish society in different ways.
