John Fownes (1661-1731) was an important person in England a long time ago. He lived in Devon, a county in the southwest of England. John Fownes owned a lot of land and was also a politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is part of the British Parliament.
John Fownes's Early Life
John Fownes was born in 1661. His father was also named John Fownes. His family had lived in Devon for a while. His great-grandfather, Thomas Fones, was even the Mayor of Plymouth in 1619.
In 1681, John Fownes married Anne Yard. Her family was also well-known in Devon. After he got married, John Fownes moved to a nice house called Kittery Court. It was near a town called Dartmouth. Later, he bought another large house, Nethway House, and fixed it up.
His Time as a Politician
John Fownes was a politician who belonged to a group called the Tories. In 1714, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the town of Dartmouth. This meant he represented Dartmouth in the House of Commons.
However, he only served for a short time. He did not run for election again in 1715. Instead, his son, also named John Fownes, became the Member of Parliament for Dartmouth.
Later Life and Family
John Fownes passed away on October 4, 1731. He was buried in Brixham. He had two sons and one daughter who lived to be adults.
His oldest son, John Fownes, also became a Member of Parliament for Dartmouth. John Fownes's grandson, Henry Fownes Luttrell, later inherited a famous place called Dunster Castle. He even added "Luttrell" to his name to honor his wife's family, who owned the castle.
John Fownes also gave a special silver flagon to St Mary's Church in Brixham. Many members of the Fownes family are buried there.
