Sir John Gibson (born around 1637, died 1717) was an important military leader and politician in England. He is famous for starting the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot, a well-known army group. He also served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth, representing the people there in the English government.

Sir John Gibson's Life and Career

Early Military Adventures

John Gibson was born near Edinburgh, Scotland. His father was also named Sir John Gibson. Young John joined the Dutch army and became a captain in 1675. Later, in 1688, he was a major. He traveled with William of Orange when William came to England.

Rising Through the Ranks

Sir John continued his military career in England. In 1689, he became a lieutenant-colonel. By 1694, he was a colonel of a new regiment. He then became colonel of the regiment that would later be known as the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot in 1702. He held this important command until 1705.

From 1689 until his death in 1717, Sir John was the lieutenant-governor of Portsmouth. This was a key role in managing the city's defenses.

Leading in Portsmouth and Newfoundland

In 1697, Sir John Gibson was chosen to lead land forces. Their mission was to capture Newfoundland. He left England in March and returned in October of that year. His efforts helped secure the fishing rights for English settlers there.

Sir John also had a political career. He tried to become a Member of Parliament for Portsmouth in 1696 but didn't win. However, he was successfully elected for the area in 1702. In 1705, Queen Anne honored him by making him a knight.

Sir John Gibson's Family

Sir John Gibson had two sons, named Francis and James. He also had two daughters. His eldest daughter, Anne Mary, married a general named Robert Dalzell. Sir John's brothers were Sir Alexander Gibson and Sir Thomas Gibson.
