What Makes the House Special?
The John Glover Noble House is on the west side of Danbury Road. It is a large brick building with two and a half stories. The roof slopes down on the sides, and it has four chimneys. The house faces east, sitting on a small hill above the road.
Looking at the Outside
The front of the house has five sections with windows. The windows are tall and rectangular. They have flat stone tops. The main door is in the middle. It has thin windows on each side and decorative columns called pilasters. A small porch with a shed roof covers the entrance. This porch has thin, round columns. Above the main door, there is a special "Palladian window." This type of window has a large arched center section with smaller rectangular windows on each side.
The House's History
This beautiful house was built in the 1820s. It was built by John Glover Noble. His family was one of the first families to settle in New Milford. The house stayed in the Noble family for many years.
Built with Local Materials
Many parts of the house were made right in the area. The bricks used to build the house came from a brickyard owned by the Noble family. The metal parts, like hinges and latches, were made at a family ironworks. Even the glass for the windows came from a glass factory in Marbledale. This shows how much was made locally back then.
A Famous Description
In the 1930s, a famous writer named Edna Ferber wrote about the house. She called it "the most beautiful in America." She included this description in her novel, An American Beauty. This shows how much people admired the house's design. In 2017, the house was opened as an antique shop.
