John Green (born around 1400, died May 1, 1473) was an important person in England's government during the 1400s. He became the Speaker of the House of Commons in October 1460. The House of Commons is a group of elected people who help make laws for the country. Being the Speaker meant he was in charge of leading their meetings and making sure everything ran smoothly.

Green was from a place called Widdington in Essex, England. He followed in his father's footsteps, also named John Green. He studied to become a lawyer at a famous school called Gray's Inn. He later married Agnes, and they lived in Widdington Hall.

John Green's Political Journey

John Green started his career as a lawyer. He was even hired by a powerful royal group called the Duchy of Lancaster. This group managed many lands and properties for the king.

Joining Parliament

In 1455, John Green was chosen to represent Essex in Parliament. He was known as a "knight of the shire," which meant he was a representative for his county.

At this time, England was going through a period of big changes and conflicts, sometimes called the Wars of the Roses. John Green decided to support the Yorkist side, following a powerful leader named Viscount Bourchier.

Becoming Speaker

In the autumn of 1460, John Green was elected to Parliament for Essex a second time. Because of his skills and experience, he was then chosen to be the Speaker of the House of Commons. This was a very important job, showing he was trusted to lead the discussions and decisions in Parliament.

Later Life and Responsibilities

After his time as Speaker, John Green continued to serve the country in other ways.

Managing Estates

In early 1462, John Green and his brother were given a big responsibility. They were put in charge of managing large areas of land in Essex, Cambridgeshire, and Suffolk. These lands had belonged to a nobleman who had lost them due to serious actions against the king.

Serving the King's Council

In 1467, John Green attended a meeting of the king's council. This was a group of important advisors to the king. In 1469, he was given another important role: he became a deputy to a very powerful noble, Richard Neville, who was the chief manager of the Duchy of Lancaster. This shows how much he was valued for his legal and administrative skills.

End of Life

John Green passed away in 1473 and was buried in Gosfield, Essex. He had two daughters, Agnes and Margaret, who became his main heirs. Another daughter became the head of a religious house called Dartford Priory.
