John Gurdon was the son of Robert Gurdon. His family lived in a place called Assington in Suffolk, England. His mother was Rose Sexton. She was from Lavenham, also in Suffolk. John Gurdon studied law for a while when he was young.
He married Amy Brampton. She was the daughter of William Brampton from Letton, Norfolk. Through his marriage to Amy, John Gurdon gained control of the Letton estate. They had a daughter and a son named Brampton. Their son Brampton also grew up to become a Member of Parliament for Sudbury, just like his father.
