Sir John Hay Williams, 2nd Baronet (born 9 January 1794 – died 10 September 1859) was an important figure in his time. He was part of a famous family that included Sir William Williams, who was known for building the grand Bodelwyddan Castle.

Sir John was born right there at Bodelwyddan. His father was Sir John Williams, 1st Baronet. In 1842, Sir John officially added "Hay" to his name, becoming Sir John Hay Williams.

What Did Sir John Do?

Sir John Hay Williams held several important positions during his life. These roles were called "High Sheriff." A High Sheriff was a very old and respected position, like a top official in a county. They were responsible for keeping the peace and making sure laws were followed.

High Sheriff Roles

  • In 1832, he was the High Sheriff of Anglesey. Anglesey is an island county in Wales.
  • Then, in 1836, he became the High Sheriff of Flintshire, another county in Wales.
  • Finally, in 1839, he served as the High Sheriff of Denbighshire, also in Wales.

These roles showed that he was a trusted and respected leader in his community.

Bodelwyddan Castle's Makeover

One of Sir John's most significant contributions was to Bodelwyddan Castle. In the middle of the 1800s, he led a huge renovation project. This work completely changed the castle into the beautiful building you can see today. He made sure the castle was updated and looked its best.

Sir John's Family Life

In 1842, Sir John married Lady Sarah Elizabeth Pitt Amherst. She was the daughter of William Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst, who was also a very important person.

Sir John and Lady Sarah had several children. One of their daughters was named Margaret Maria. She later married Sir Edmund Hope Verney. After Sir John Hay Williams passed away, his brother, Sir Hugh Williams, became the 3rd Baronet.
