John Hegarty is an Irish scientist and educator. He was born in 1948. From 2001 to 2011, he was the leader of Trinity College Dublin. This important role is called the Provost.

John Hegarty's Early Life and School
John Hegarty grew up in Claremorris, a town in County Mayo, Ireland. He went to school there at St Colman's College.
He studied at different universities. He earned a science degree from Maynooth University. He also got a teaching diploma from there. Later, he earned his PhD from the University of Galway.
John Hegarty's Career in Science
After finishing his studies, John Hegarty worked as a scientist. He spent six years doing research at Bell Labs in New Jersey, USA.
In 1986, he came back to Ireland. He became a professor at Trinity College Dublin. He taught about laser physics, which is a science that studies light.
John Hegarty has written over 140 scientific papers. He also helped create new inventions. He helped start a company called Eblana Photonics.
He is a member of several important science groups. These include the Royal Irish Academy and the American Physical Society. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
Before becoming the Provost, he was in charge of research at Trinity College. He also led the Physics Department.
John Hegarty's Family Life
John Hegarty is married to Neasa Ní Chinnéide. She is the President of the European Bureau for Lesser-Used Languages. They have two children, Cillian and Ciarán.
