John Hildesley's Time in Parliament

Early Political Role (1653)

In 1653, John Hildesley was chosen to represent the area of Hampshire. He served in a special group called the Barebones Parliament. This Parliament was set up during a time when England was not ruled by a king.

Representing Winchester

Later, Hildesley became a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Winchester. He was first elected for Winchester in the First Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected as MP for Winchester two more times. He served in the Second Protectorate Parliament in 1656 and the Third Protectorate Parliament in 1659. These parliaments were part of the time when England was a republic, led by Oliver Cromwell.

Serving Christchurch (1660)

In 1660, Hildesley was elected as an MP for Christchurch. This was for the Convention Parliament. This Parliament was very important because it helped bring the king back to England after the republic.

Family Life

John Hildesley married Margaret Tulse. She was the widow of Henry Tulse. Through this marriage, John Hildesley became the stepfather to another Henry Tulse. Interestingly, this younger Henry Tulse also became an MP for Christchurch and served alongside John Hildesley in 1660.
