Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Hippisley (born 1530, died 1570) was an English lawyer and politician. He was known for his work as a judge and for serving in the English Parliament.

Early Life and Family

John Hippisley was born in Ston Easton, Somerset, a county in England. His parents were John Hippisley and Agnes Aleyn. In 1544, his father bought a large estate called the manor of Ston Easton from the King or Queen for £500. When his father passed away in 1558, John inherited this important estate.

A Successful Lawyer

John became a highly skilled lawyer in London. He trained at the Middle Temple, which is one of the oldest and most famous places where lawyers learn their trade. One expert, Dr. Hubert Hall, described him as one of the most successful lawyers of his time who worked outside of London.

John also helped pay for the construction of the Middle Temple Hall. This was a big meeting place for lawyers. The leaders of Middle Temple were very thankful, which shows he gave a lot of money.

Political Career

John Hippisley was also involved in politics. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Wells from 1562 to 1566. Before that, he was briefly an MP for Bridport. An MP is someone who helps make laws for the country.

He also worked as the main judge for the city of Bristol. This important job was called the Recorder of Bristol. He held this position from 1551 until he died.

Land and Home

John Hippisley bought several estates during his life. In 1559, he purchased the manor of Whitnell. In 1561, he bought another estate called Cameley and built a house there called Cameley Court.

Even though his mother, Agnes, still lived and managed the family estate at Ston Easton, John seemed to prefer living at Cameley. Old records from 1623 describe him as being "of Cameley," meaning that was his main home.

In 1564, John received a special design called a coat of arms. This was a symbol of his family's status. In 1570, he bought another estate, the manor of Emborough.

Later Life and Death

John Hippisley's career ended suddenly. He died at the age of 40 on August 12, 1570. He was buried in Cameley nine days later. His son, who was also named John, took over his estates and responsibilities.
