John James Hope-Johnstone: A Scottish Politician

John James Hope-Johnstone was an important figure in Scottish politics during the 1800s. He was known for serving in the British Parliament and for his family's long history. He lived at Raehills in Lockerbie, Scotland.

Growing Up and Family Life

John James Hope-Johnstone was born on November 29, 1796. His father was Vice-Admiral Sir William Johnstone Hope. His mother was Lady Anne, who was the eldest daughter of the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun.

On July 8, 1816, John James married Alicia Anne Gordon. She was the eldest daughter of George Gordon. Together, they had a large family with at least 11 children. He was also in charge of Lochmaben Palace, a historic site.

His Time in Parliament

John James Hope-Johnstone became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Dumfriesshire. An MP is a person elected to represent their local area in the country's main law-making body. He served two different periods in Parliament.

His first time as an MP was from 1830 to 1847. He returned to Parliament later, serving again from 1857 to 1865. He took over from his father, who retired from politics. It is said that King William IV encouraged him to become an MP.

What He Did as an MP

While in Parliament, John James Hope-Johnstone supported new laws that aimed to improve things for people. He also presented a request from ministers of the Church of Scotland. This request asked for daily Bible classes for Protestant children in Ireland. This shows he was interested in education and religious matters.

His Home and Later Life

John James Hope-Johnstone lived at a place called Raehills in Lockerbie. He made the house much bigger during his time there. He also had another home called Hook House in Dumfriesshire.

He was considered the 7th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell by right, meaning he was the rightful heir to the title. He tried several times to officially become a peer (a member of the nobility), but it did not happen. He passed away on July 11, 1876.]
