John Hungerford (born around 1566 – died March 18, 1635) was an English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, at different times between 1597 and 1611.

Early Life and Education

John Hungerford was the son of Anthony Hungerford of Downe Ampney, Wiltshire, and his wife Bridget Shelley. When he was 17 years old, John started studying at St John's College, Oxford on April 12, 1583.

John Hungerford held several important roles during his life.

Local Government Roles

He became a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Gloucestershire and Wiltshire starting in 1588. A J.P. was a local official who helped keep the peace and deal with minor legal matters. In 1591, he was knighted, which meant he received the title "Sir."

He also served as the High Sheriff of Wiltshire from 1592 to 1593. Later, he was the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire from 1597 to 1598. A High Sheriff was a very important local official, responsible for law and order in their county.

Parliamentary Career

In 1594, John Hungerford earned his Master of Arts (MA) degree. In 1597, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for Gloucestershire. An MP is a representative who speaks for the people of their area in the House of Commons.

He was very interested in the town of Cricklade. In 1601, he helped build the market house on the High Street there. He also added a special support, called a flying buttress, to the Lady Chapel of St Sampson’s Church in Cricklade. In 1604, he was elected as an MP again, this time for Cricklade.

Service to the King

John Hungerford was also a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber for King James I. This was a special role close to the King. In 1628, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Gloucestershire, helping to organize the local military forces.

Family Life

John Hungerford was married twice. His first wife was Mary Berkeley, the daughter of Sir Richard Berkeley. His second wife was Anna Goddard, the daughter of Edward Goddard. He was also the brother of Anthony Hungerford of Black Bourton.

Later Life and Legacy

John Hungerford passed away in 1635. He was remembered as someone who lived an honorable life, served his King and country well, was generous to his friends, kind to the poor, and polite to everyone.
