John I of Brienne, Count of Eu

John I of Brienne was an important French nobleman who lived in the 1200s. He was known as the Count of Eu. The title of Count was like being a powerful leader or ruler of a specific area called a county. John I became Count of Eu in 1260.

Family Background and Title

John I of Brienne was the son of Alphonso of Brienne and Marie de Lusigan. His mother, Marie, was the person who would inherit the land and title of Eu. This meant that when she passed away, the title of Count of Eu would go to her son, John.

John I took over the title of Count of Eu in 1260. This happened after his mother, Marie, passed away. His father, Alphonso, was sometimes called "Mister Alphons" or "Alphons, son of the king of Jerusalem." However, the title of Count of Eu officially passed to John.

Marriage and Children

John I of Brienne married a woman named Beatrice. She was the daughter of Guy III, who was the Count of Saint-Pol. Together, John and Beatrice had several children:

  • John II of Brienne, who later became the next Count of Eu.
  • Isabelle, who passed away around 1302 or 1307. She married John II of Dampierre, who was the Viscount of Troyes.
  • Jeanne, who passed away after March 12, 1325. She was married twice. Her first husband was Raymond VI, Viscount of Turenne. Her second husband was Renauld, Lord of Picquigny.
  • Marguerite, who passed away in 1310. She married Guy, the Viscount of Thouars. Guy's family was also connected to important noble lines.
  • Mahaut, who passed away after 1328. She married Alfonso de la Cerda.

Later Life and Death

John I of Brienne passed away on June 12, 1294. He died in a place called Clermont-en-Beauvaisis. After his death, his son, John II, became the new Count of Eu.
