About John Nicholl

His Early Life and Education

John Nicholl was born in 1797. His parents were John Nicholl and Judy Birt. He went to Westminster School for his early education. In 1816, he earned a spot at Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university.

He studied Classics and achieved top grades. Later, in 1825, he earned a special law degree called a Doctor of Civil Law. The next year, he became an Advocate of the Doctors' Commons. This meant he could argue cases in certain courts.

Family and Home

In 1821, John Nicholl married Jane Harriet. Her father was Thomas Mansel Talbot. Jane Harriet was also the sister of Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot.

John and Jane Harriet had seven children together. When his father passed away in 1838, John inherited the family home. This grand estate was called Merthyr Mawr House. His oldest son, John Cole Nicholl, later inherited the estate from him.

Important Government Roles

On March 14, 1835, John Nicholl was given a new job. He became a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury. This role involved helping to manage the government's money. He held this position until April 18 of the next year.

Nicholl also held another important role called the Master of the Faculties. In 1838, he became the Vicar-General of the Province of Canterbury. This was a special legal position within the Church of England, and his father had held it before him.
