John Joseph O'Callaghan (born in 1838, died in 1905) was a talented architect from Ireland. He designed many buildings in both England and his home country, Ireland.

Life of an Architect

John Joseph O'Callaghan was born in County Cork, Ireland. He trained as an architect there. Later, he moved to Dublin to work with famous architects Thomas Newenham Deane and Benjamin Woodward.

In 1856, he went to Oxford, England. He worked there as a "clerk of works." This meant he helped manage building projects. While in Oxford, he studied old buildings. He especially liked the "Gothic style" of architecture. This style uses pointed arches, tall windows, and detailed decorations. O'Callaghan became a big fan of this style.

He worked with Deane and Woodward for many years. In 1871, he started his own architecture business. It was located in Merrion Row in Dublin. The next year, in 1872, he became the very first president of the Architectural Association of Ireland. This group helps architects and promotes good building design.
