John Monro (born November 5, 1725 – died May 24, 1789) was a Scottish lawyer. He came from a well-known family called the Munro of Auchinbowie. His father was Dr. Alexander Monro (primus), a famous doctor.

Early Life and Education
John Monro went to school in Edinburgh. He studied at Mr Mundell's school. After his studies, he became a lawyer. He was officially allowed to practice law on July 24, 1753. At this time, he was 27 years old.
A Career in Law
John Monro was a successful lawyer. On January 21, 1758, he got a special job. He became a government lawyer in the High Court of Admiralty. This court handled cases related to the sea. His brother-in-law, James Philp, who was a judge, helped him get this role.
Sometimes, in 1762, John even filled in for the judge. He took the judge's place when the judge was away. From 1760 to 1769, he was part of a group of lawyers. They wrote down and shared the important decisions made by the Court of Session. He was also a member of The Select Society. This was a special club for smart people.
Family Life
On July 8, 1757, John Monro got married. His wife was Sophia Inglis. She was the daughter of Archibald Inglis. Archibald had passed away. Sophia was one of three sisters who shared her father's property. John's father also gave him the family estate. This estate was called Auchinbowie.
His Legacy
John Monro passed away on May 24, 1789. He was 63 years old. He did not leave a will. Because of this, his property, Auchinbowie, was divided. It was split between his two daughters.
