John Montagu, Marquess of Monthermer, was an important person in British society. He was born on March 18, 1735, and passed away on April 11, 1770. He held special titles as a British peer. A peer is a member of the nobility, often with a title like Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, or Baron.

Early Life and Family

John Montagu was born with the name John Brudenell. His parents were George Brudenell, who was the 4th Earl of Cardigan, and Mary. Mary was the daughter of John Montagu, the 2nd Duke of Montagu. Because John was the oldest son, he was expected to inherit his father's title. From the day he was born, he was known as Lord Brudenell.

Changing the Family Name

In 1749, John's grandfather, the Duke of Montagu, passed away. His father, Lord Cardigan, inherited all the Duke's lands and wealth. To honor the Montagu family, Lord Cardigan and his children decided to change their last name. They officially became Montagu instead of Brudenell.

New Titles and Honors

As John grew older, he received special honors. On May 8, 1762, he was given the title of Baron Montagu of Boughton. This title was named after Boughton, a place in Northamptonshire.

A few years later, on November 5, 1766, his father received an even higher honor. He was made the first Duke of Montagu (for the second time this title was created). When his father became a Duke, John received a special courtesy title. He was then known as Marquess of Monthermer.

Public Life

Before he became a Baron, John Montagu was briefly involved in politics. He was a Member of Parliament for a short time, representing the area of Marlborough. He belonged to the Tory Party, which was one of the main political groups in Britain. His uncle, Colonel Robert Brudenell, also served in Parliament with him.

In 1764, a famous artist named Pompeo Batoni painted John's portrait. This painting helps us see what he looked like long ago.

Later Years and Legacy

Sadly, Lord Monthermer passed away quite young, at the age of thirty-five. He died on April 11, 1770. He was never married and did not have any children.

Because he had no children, his title of Baron Montagu could not be passed on. It ended with him. However, the title was later created again for his father on August 21, 1786. This time, it was arranged so that the younger sons of John's sister, Elizabeth, Duchess of Buccleuch, could inherit it.
