John Morris (piper) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

John Morris was a famous Irish musician who played the Uilleann pipes. He was also known as Morris Sarsfield and Muiruich. He lived around the mid-1800s, from about 1850 to 1875.

Morris came from a place called Clydagh, near Headford in County Galway, Ireland. People sometimes called him Morris Sarsfield because they admired a famous general named Patrick Sarsfield who lived much earlier. If people spoke Irish in his area, they knew him as Muiruich.

A Talented but Restless Musician

A person named Nicholas Burke said that John Morris was a very strong man and an amazing piper. However, he was also very restless. He found it hard to stay in one place for long.

Morris spent a lot of his life in England. If he was ever back home in Ireland, he would often join the groups of people who traveled to England each year for harvesting work.

The Miners' Reel

Once, while he was in Wales, Morris was spending time with a group of miners. They asked him to play a special tune called The Collier’s Reel. But Morris didn't know that particular song.

He tried to play a different tune instead. This made the miners unhappy. They felt that if he couldn't play a song named after their job, he wasn't worthy of their support. Because of this, the miners chased him out of town!

A Mysterious Life

We don't know exactly when John Morris was born or when he died. We also don't know where he passed away. The only thing for sure is that he was alive and playing his pipes during the middle part of the 1800s.
