John Norden (1612 – 20 June 1669) was an English lawyer and politician. He was a member of the English Parliament, known as the House of Commons, at different times between 1654 and 1669.

Who Was John Norden?

John Norden was born in 1612. He was the second son of William Norden and Mary Lybbe. His family lived in Rowde, Wiltshire.

His Early Life and Learning

John Norden went to Hart Hall, which is part of Oxford University. He earned his first degree in 1631. In 1630, he joined Middle Temple. This was a place where lawyers trained. He became a lawyer in 1638. In 1641, his brother passed away. John then took over the family's land and property.

Starting a Career in Law and Politics

From 1646 to 1653, John Norden was a Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Wiltshire. A J.P. helps keep law and order in a local area.

In 1654, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented Wiltshire in a special Parliament called the First Protectorate Parliament. In 1657, he became a J.P. for Wiltshire again. He also helped collect taxes and organize the local army. He continued these roles until his death.

Serving in Parliament

In April 1660, John Norden was elected as an MP for two places. These were Old Sarum and Devizes. He chose to represent Old Sarum in the Convention Parliament. He was also considered for a special honor called Knight of the Royal Oak.

In 1662, he became an alderman in Devizes. An alderman is a senior member of a town council. He held this position until he died. In December 1666, he was elected as an MP for Devizes again. This was during the Cavalier Parliament. From 1667, he worked as a solicitor for aids in Wiltshire.

Family and Later Life

John Norden got married when he was 30 years old. He married Elizabeth Skinner in 1647. Elizabeth was the daughter of Edmund Skinner. John and Elizabeth had six children together. John Norden passed away on 20 June 1669.
